The Right Preschool Choice – The Best Start for a Six-Year-Old

As a parent of a six-year-old, you’ve probably asked yourself more than once: is my child already ready for school? That’s completely natural. There are many opinions, comparisons, and “good advice” all around. Some say, “they can count well, so it’s time,” while others warn against starting too early. The decision isn’t easy because it concerns not only education, but above all your child’s comfort, emotions, and sense of security.

That’s why today we want to calmly—without pressure or fear—show what everyday life looks like for a six-year-old in a well-designed preschool preparatory class. How children learn to think, act, and cooperate, and why a year in a thoughtfully planned preschool “zerówka” truly gives children (and parents) a real sense of school readiness.

What is school readiness really?

School readiness is not a checklist of skills to tick off.

A six-year-old may know letters and numbers, count very well, be bright and curious about the world, and at the same time:

  • get tired of learning more quickly,
  • react strongly emotionally,
  • need close support from an adult,
  • struggle with failure, pressure, or major changes.

School readiness is about emotional, social, and cognitive maturity. That’s why some children at this age thrive at school, but many truly benefit from spending another year in a preparatory class—provided that the program is more than just a “waiting room before school.” It’s a great time to combine play and learning in an atmosphere of understanding and without unnecessary pressure.

What is the preschool preparatory class at KIDS&Co. like for a six-year-old?

Let’s start with the fact that choosing the right preparatory class is not easy. A well-matched program supports a child’s development on many levels. What should you look for, and how do you make the best choice? Let’s take a closer look at a well-designed preschool preparatory class.

The preparatory class at KIDS&Co. has been designed very thoughtfully. It is a time when a child:

  • learns independence,
  • builds self-confidence in a friendly environment,
  • practices concentration and perseverance,
  • experiences learning as something meaningful and engaging,
  • develops language awareness.

A young boy sits on the carpet in a preschool with other children playing, looking straight at the camera.

What does learning look like in practice?

Learning is not about repetition and memorization. It happens through action, experience, and cooperation.

Math you can see and touch

Children work with, among others:

  • Numicon – specialist colorful shapes representing numbers,
  • SumBlox – wooden blocks whose size corresponds to numerical value,
  • Grabowski Cards – a series of educational games and teaching tools created by Andrzej Grabowski, which teach children mathematics (multiplication tables, addition, subtraction, fractions) and develop logical thinking, memory, and concentration by combining learning with play and positive emotions.

Thanks to this:

  • numbers become a real experience, not just symbols on paper,
  • children understand relationships between them,
  • they learn logical thinking rather than mechanical memorization.

This is physical, visual, and engaging mathematics.

Polish language and reading – naturally, without pressure

Learning to read starts with sounds, movement, and emotions—not with a board.

We use a multisensory approach:

  • sounds have their own stories, gestures, and songs,
  • children combine sounds into words in a natural context,
  • we use the modern “Effective Surprise” method, which engages attention and curiosity.

Reading becomes discovery, not obligation.

Bilingual education in preschool: English as part of everyday life

English in the KIDS&Co. preparatory class is not a “lesson.” It is a language of action. Children are cared for daily by both Polish- and English-speaking teachers who accompany them throughout their time at the facility.

We use, among others:

  • Jolly Phonics (sounds, movement, songs),
  • language immersion,
  • storytelling and mini-debates,
  • Cambridge Primary materials,
  • apps and interactive tools.

As a result, children think in English rather than just repeating vocabulary.

STEAM and natural sciences

Each project develops curiosity and creativity. Children explore, experiment, observe, and draw conclusions. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) is part of everyday practice, not an add-on.

Emotional and social development

Every activity has a social dimension:

  • teamwork,
  • conflict resolution,
  • responsibility for one’s role.

Graphomotor skills

Regular graphomotor exercises prepare the hand for writing in a natural and pressure-free way.

PUS Education System (Think – Arrange – Check)

  • What it is: a system combining play and learning, helping to develop logical thinking, concentration, memory, and other skills.
  • How it works: the child completes tasks from themed booklets and then arranges special blocks in a control set to check whether the answer is correct by matching patterns.
  • Components: a control box (with 12 blocks) and a wide range of themed booklets (math, language, nature, emotions).

Individualization and learning materials

Each child:

  • works at their own pace,
  • uses dedicated materials,
  • is observed and supported individually.

The child experiences success rather than comparison with others. A preschool teacher wearing a red shirt and glasses hugs children.

A “second” year of preparatory class – a real developmental leap

A six-year-old who stays in the group for another year is not falling behind. They move to a higher developmental level with greater confidence and security:

  • they plan,
  • take responsibility,
  • complete longer projects,
  • develop independence and self-confidence.

From this point, children enter school prepared and confident in their abilities.

“Technical” benefits that truly matter

There are many additional aspects that influence a child’s proper development:

  • a flexible daily schedule,
  • full-day care with no breaks during holidays or vacations,
  • all-day meals,
  • spaces designed for children’s needs,
  • greater teacher attentiveness,
  • learning through action rather than traditional “lesson format”.

All of this directly impacts the child’s comfort and the parent’s peace of mind.

New Horizon Primary School – a natural continuation

In September 2026, we are opening the New Horizon International School in Warsaw—a primary school that continues the KIDS&Co. preparatory class philosophy.

For parents, this means:

  • a consistent educational path,
  • no “reset” of the child’s competencies,
  • an environment that understands their pace.

  • a natural and calm rhythm,
